Course Objectives: Students should acquire an understanding of the STDs which have an impact on them and on the local and global society. In addition to learning some information about each disease, you will participate in discussions of the issues surrounding STDs, particularly how we can reduce their occurence. Your honesty and open-mindedness will make these discussions a meaningful forum for exchange of ideas.By all means, ask questions and make relevant comments throughout the class period.

With the exception of the first class meeting, you are expected to have done the reading and/or assignments before coming to class.. I will not spend time on some of the factual data and terms that are otherwise clearly presented.

GRADES: Grades will be based on scores from

  • individual exams (180 points total),
  • group exams (60 points),
  • in-class assignments/activities (50 points); because participation is important these cannot be made up. Attendance therefore will become part of your grade. The class meets for 12 sessions - you may miss two class sessions without penalty. Each additional class session missed will result in lowering your final grade by one letter grade.
  • a poster and web review project (50 points each).

The exams will be multiple choice, short answer, and brief essay. Final grades for the course are likely to be curved, but the curve will not be decided until the end of the course with the following exception - the C grade will be set at 65%.
