SESSION 5

SESSION 5: How Did Humans Evolve? Is Evolution Still Happening?

Elaborate Part A: Hominid Migration

Discoveries of fossil hominids around the world have helped scientists determine not only the likely place of origin for the human species, but also a migration path throughout the world. It's very helpful to have a clear visual representation of where fossils were found.

Create a map of hominid migration. The activity Fossils and Human Migration Patterns of Early Hominids in the Evolution Teacher's Guide Unit 5 (pdf) will lead you through this process. Also, print out the Hominid Fossil Data sheet (pdf) and a world map (pdf) for locating fossil evidence.

Refer to your map as you think about the following questions:

•

Which human species overlap in time and, possibly, place?

•

What biological adaptations would you expect to find in modern human populations in different parts of the world?
