Public docks at 15th and M streets and Balboa Island, Newport Bay, Orange Co., CA, May 9, 2025

image
We started today's normal field class at the beach, the last of our semester, instead with a lab exam. Then we went to Newport Bay to view habitats with protection from the surf.

We were luckier than the last few years when it seems whoever clears the animals of the public dock had cleared them off just before we have a chance to observe them. This year was good.

Until (or if) I manage to get some of these critters identified, see the following link to identifications I added with help from some experts about 10 years ago: Spring 2015 Visit to this same dock.

A highlight on Balboa Island was seeing about 10 Navanax inermis (California aglaja), a large-bodied slug that loves to slurp up other sea slugs.
