I am guessing that the dead cormorants and brown pelicans that I saw on the beach were washed up after a toxic algal bloom evemt that I read about on southern California shores. The idea is that the toxins bioaccumulate after they work their way up to animals at higher trophic levels feeding on fishes that ate the copepods that ate the toxic diatoms.
