Large owl limpets (Lottia gigantea) defend their territory by shoving intruders off with considerable force, but the smaller limpet species, Lottia conus (or its more northern relative, Lottia scabra), is able to live within the owl limpet territory because it can make an effective home depression, resting below the surrounding rock surface.
