SESSION 4

SESSION 4: What Are the Processes for Evolution?

Evaluate Part A: Revisit Natural Selection

Explain and give examples for each of the following statements about natural selection (adapted from Freeman and Herron, Evolutionary Analysis, pp. 57-61):

1.

Natural selection acts on individuals, but it is populations that evolve.

2.

Natural selection acts on phenotypes, but its actions change the allele frequencies in a population.

3.

The entire individual is the target of selection, not the individual genes.

4.

Natural selection can create new traits, even though it acts on existing traits.

5.

Natural selection does not lead to perfection, only adaptation.

6.

Natural selection is nonrandom, but it does not necessarily lead to more advanced organisms.
