Incorporation of Mutant M2 Molecules into Virions

In theory, it is possible for even altered M2 proteins to have some ion channel activity. Mutant viruses might compensate for this defect by incorporating more M2 proteins into the viral envelope. This experiment determined whether increased M2 incorporation was the reason why mutant types were able to replicate. The test was performed by western blot analysis using the altered M2 proteins from M2de129-31 and M2 HATM mutant viruses, which had shown no ionic activity yet were able to replicate , as well as the wild type virus.
