Who knew spider eggs had a shell?

Spider eggs are surrounded by a hard shell that protects the developing embryo - just like a chicken. The composition of the shell has not been well characterized. In these scanning electron micrographs you can see that the shell appears to be composed of a collection of very small spheres.
