Hoover's manzanita (Arctostaphylos hooveri) was in bloom. It is a rare endemic plant only found in portions of the Santa Lucia mountains, and it blooms earlier (in January!) than do most other plants at Big Creek. See the vegetation map here for its distribution mapped in pink.
