Geography Challenge has two parts: Country Challenge and the newer more colorful USA Challenge. To play USA Challenge, choose USA Challenge from the Quiz menu. See below for further information about this stack. To get started with Country Challenge: Choose one, two, three, or four players from the Quiz menu. Click on one of the quiz buttons or select a quiz option from the Quiz menu. To play, click on any of three possible answers to each question. Keep playing if you were correct, otherwise it is the next player's turn. Play to 21 for starters. At any time, you can change the region from which countries and cities are chosen--this will reset the total accumulated correct response tally but will not reset each player's score. To start a new game, click the same or a different quiz button again (or select from the Quiz menu). To export the data to Microsoft Excel (or another spreadsheet program): Choose Export Data from the File menu Save the file in your desired location Open Excel Choose Open from File menu of Excel Click on Text button in Open dialog box Click on Comma-delimited option Choose the file name you saved above and open To import data: Choose Save As... from Excel menu Click on Options button in Save dialog box Click on CSV option Save to disk Open Geography Challenge Select Import Data from File menu Choose the file saved above and Open We would appreciate hearing about the typos that you discover, as well as suggestions and enhancements. Arie and Doug Version history: version 0.51 12/24/93: Added this help facility; enhanced speed somewhat through reduced calls to field data; fixed a minor bug for 1-player mode; corrected a few typos. version .52 2/28/94: Corrected more typos supplied by helpful users. Added one country (Eritrea). Fixed a minor menu problem. version 0.9 -- 2/29/96: added USA Challenge game, but this version was not released due to persisting minor glitches. version 1.0 -- 6/02: Added support for multiple monitor depths and improved menus. In early 1996 we added the "USA" map and quiz to the original "Country" part of Geography Challenge. It worked OK then but was still a bit quirky and we never got around to releasing it. So, choose USA Quiz from the Quiz menu and check it out! We encourage you to contact us if you want to collaborate to make this a more stable stack! Help for USA Challenge: Click on "Play" button Choose between three quizzes Click on the state that corresponds to the State/Capital/Other City name displayed Repeat until all 50 states have been clicked If your total time is among the fastest ten times recorded for a particular quiz, you will be prompted to enter your name for the High Score list. To clear high score lists for a particular quiz, choose "Clear High Scores" from the File menu Choose "Countries" from the Quiz menu to play Country Challenge instead Doug Eernisse (programmer of Geography Challenge) Disclaimers: 1) The country and capital cities data was last updated (checking against a listing at FactMonster.com) on June 10, 2002. The "other cities" were not updated or checked. They were somewhat haphazardly chosen so expect some to be a bit obscure. 2) There is no help menu option for "USA Challenge" (but see below) 3) High scores for each "USA Challenge" quiz can be cleared with the "Clear High Scores..." menu item of the File menu, when the USA Challenge quiz is active. You may wish to reset them after your children have mastered them, so that neophytes can have the pleasure of setting new record times. In order to avoid hard feelings that might arise when the previous high scorers find out their scores were cleared, the previous high scores can be exported as a simple text file. If you are using this in a classroom, I suggest you create your own USA Challenge Hall of Fame. This is a modest game but is one that both Arie and my younger child used to learn world and USA geography very quickly. They especially enjoyed trying to get to the top of the High Scores listing in USA Challenge. As a bonus, they both learned computer mouse dexterity in the process. -- GEOGRAPHY CHALLENGE (v. 0.51 -- 12/24/93) -- Up-to-date (12/93) challenging geography quiz software -- Learn all the world's countries, their capitals, and a big city -- Database entry by Arie (9), programming by Doug Eernisse (dad) -- This program costs a postcard for personal use -- If you like it, PLEASE send Arie a postcard of your home town -- (or anywhere, really) to: 3413 Madonna Dr.; Fullerton, CA 92835 USA -- This software (c) 1993, 1994 by Arie Eernisse and Doug Eernisse. -- It may not be sold or used commercially without permission.
