Example of card from "Higher Taxa" stack, for "Leptochitonidae" in this
case. The "Synonyms" and
"Present Diagnosis" pop-up fields are presently displayed. This database
is maintained separately from
the recognized species and nominal species (synonyms) databases and,
like them, is also exportable
or importable in spreadsheet (tab-delimited) format. The "Up-Arrow",
"Sister", and "Down-Arrow"
navigation buttons on the bottom of the card allow for navigation to
the parent, sister(s), and daughter(s)
taxon cards. The higher taxa can be sorted by a number of fields. The
classification used in Chiton Stacks
has not been updated since about 1991 and uses a system derived from
Van Belle's (1983, 1985)
system, which is also similar to the one used for Kaas and Van Belle's
recent monographs. On the list of
planned updates is to allow for alternative classification schemes,
integrated across Chiton Stacks package.
Chiton Stacks does not have any facility for entering character data
for species or higher-level taxa, because
good programs for managing such data already exist (e.g., MacClade).
