Disassembly of reovirus virions to form ISVPs is required for reovirus-induced apoptosis. However, viral transcription and subsequent steps in viral replication are not required apoptosis. Understanding the pathways viruses use to trigger apoptosis, will contribute to our knowledge of the mechanisms by which viruses produce cellular injury and cause diesease.
