UPDATE ON PBS EVOLUTION SERIES IN SEPTEMBER
Watch the Evolution Series!
I trust most of you are aware of the four-part series on Evolution that will
be aired on public television channels from 8 to 10 pm on September 24-27, 2001.
Some SICB members have been advisors for the series since its inception; others
have been consultants along the way. The series promises to be a magnificent
vehicle for public education, as well as classroom-based instruction at all
levels. To accompany the series, a companion book by Carl Zimmer ("Evolution--The
Triumph of an Idea") will be published. Also, a diversity of multi-media
materials have been prepared, including a teacher's guide, an evolution library
(web access to multimedia resources), videos for students, teaching evolution
case studies, an online course for high school teachers, and online lessons
for students. Please see WBGH's Website (http://www.pbs.org/evolution) for information
about the series and these items. I expect that there will be several thousand
biologists and other scientists watching the series; I hope that it enjoys a
much larger audience from a public that will find it persuasive because of its
rich and well-conveyed content. At least I know where lots of us will be on
the evenings of September 24-27---glued to the TV!
Best wishes,
