The
Sheephead can be found from central California south to Baja California.
They tend to hang around rocky bottom habitats from 3-280ft. deep.
A big problem with this unique marine fish is that it’s preyed upon by
sports fishermen. Sports fishermen like to catch them for the fun
and show. They are, however, only allowed to catch and keep them
if they are bigger than 12 inches. Regulation of sports fishing
is done by the Department of Fish and Game. The problem with that,
is Fish and Game cannot possibly check everybody's catche. Therefore
regulation is not 100% accurate. The Sheephead can grow to be over
50lbs., and it would be a male fish.
