Reproduction

The horn sharks are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs and they will hatch months later.  There’s a distinct pairing for the sharks where courtship begins and the male chases the female.  Copulation may last up to 40 minutes.  Mating occurs around December and January, but they lay the eggs between February and April.  The female Horn Shark will deposit these leathery purses (Mermaids purse) in the rock crevices where they will hatch in 7-9 months.  She may lay up to 16 eggs with many intervals between doing so.  Once hatched the baby horn sharks are 5-6 inches long with the spines already there to protect them.
